A 1-Day Slovenia Itinerary

9:00 Departure from Hotel Bernardin, Portorož

1st stop: Piran

Park near the bus station and walk towards Tartini Square. Sit down for a morning coffee or shop for authentic souvenirs. Take a 10-minute walk down to the Piran lighthouse, passing a lovely marina. Or walk up through the narrow alleys to St George’s Cathedral to admire the view from a higher point. Return to your car at the bus stop.

Alternative: Drive to Koper, park behind Banka Koper bank and walk to the historic Praetorian Palace and Bell Tower at Tito Square through Gate Muda and passing Da Ponte Fountain.

10:00 Start making your way towards Ljubljana.

After approximately 40 minutes on the highway, follow the signs for Postojna and exit the highway. Now follow the signs for “Postojnska jama”.

2nd stop: Postojna Cave

11:00 Stop in Postojna for a quick lunch, then park in front of Postojna Cave. Put on comfortable shoes, buy tickets and wait for the tour (in March it starts at noon). Hop onto the underground train and explore the magnificent world of stalactites and stalagmites.

Alternative: You can drive a bit further to the other end of Postojna Cave and visit Predjama Castle – the largest cave castle in the world. It’s built on a rocky slope in front of a network of secret cave tunnels.

14:30 Leave Postojna and let the signs lead you towards Ljubljana.

3rd stop: Ljubljana city centre

15:30 Park at Križanke parking, then walk towards Ljubljanica River, passing ex-monastery, now festival venue Križanke. Cross the river at another architectural attraction, Šuštarski Bridge. Take a short walk to City Hall (the atrium is open to the public and hosts exhibitions) and the Robba Fountain, and then continue toward one of Ljubljana’s most iconic symbols, Triple Bridge. Meet the greatest Slovenian poet at Prešeren Square and shop some more in Čopova Street. Now you can take the opportunity to sit down for a drink somewhere along the tree-lined Ljubljanica embankments or visit Nebotičnik, probably the smallest skyscraper in the world. While there, take a coffee and a snack while enjoying the 360° view of Ljubljana.

17:30 Be deceived by the Museum of Illusions or try out Ljubljana’s famous funicular for a ride up the hill to Ljubljana Castle.

Alternative to Ljubljana: Continue from Postojna towards Bled.

16:00 Park at Lake Bled parking area and choose between a dreamy ride in a traditional wooden boat (pletna) to the idyllic island in the centre of the lake. When there, visit the bell tower and make a wish while you ring the bell. Or take a short climb up to the fairy-tale Bled Castle which offers a picturesque view over Lake Bled and its island, a great restaurant, and an interactive printing museum.

17:30 Pick up the best Slovenian dessert at the Park Café, the original Bled cream cake Kremšnita, and take a walk to the Heart of Bled. It’s time for a photo shoot!

19:00 Say this-is-not-a-goodbye to SLOVEnia and promise to come back next year!
